Program overview
Hokkaido University’s Modern Japanese Studies Program (MJSP) is a four-year, fully English-taught undergraduate degree that offers an immersive, multidisciplinary approach to understanding Japan. Located in Sapporo, the program combines intensive Japanese language training with academic study in history, culture, society, and political economy, equipping students to engage critically with modern Japan from both domestic and international perspectives. In the first year, students focus on language acquisition. From the second year onward, they transition into content courses while continuing to develop their fluency. The program includes fieldwork, academic writing training, and the option to take regular classes alongside Japanese students by the fourth year. Graduates emerge with the cultural literacy and communication skills needed for careers in diplomacy, global business, journalism, or advanced academic study.
